about

Dream pop duo Melancolony announce the April 29 release of their debut album, Tunnel Visions. The album, recorded between August 2015 and March 2016, focuses on a theme especially common to Western millennials: the existential dilemma posed while seeking a meaningful life in an age of irony and materialism.

Guided by the literary lyrics and affective vocals of Justin Loudermilk (who pays the bills as a teacher), and complemented by multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Natasha Loudermilk (a commercial model), their melodic vocal chemistry is reminiscent of college radio staples Yo La Tengo, Broken Social Scene and the Rosebuds.

Besides a brief stint in Eugene, Oregon, Justin has lived most of his life in Georgia, and a wide array of indie Georgia-bred artistic influences are evident on Tunnel Visions. Filled with biblical allusions and postmodern imagery, “Surely You Will Not Die,” for example, is not far from the cryptic Southern Gothic murmurs of early R.E.M., while the fuzzy power-pop anthem “Quarter Life Crises” would fit in nicely on New Adventures in Hi-Fi or Document.

“Halflife,” “Better Again,” and “Central Nervous Fire Machine” recall the warped yearnings of fellow Atlantans Deerhunter, and other songs, such as the title track and “Spaces in My Mind,” echo the synth-wave nostalgia of Washed Out. “Circles in Eugene” and “Daydreaming Monday” sound like a more accessible version of the Olivia Tremor Control.

Although often heady, the album is not without its lighter moments. “Cable News Network Blues” confronts the upcoming American presidential election with smirking sarcasm and take droll stabs at Republican candidate Donald Trump, and “You’ve Got Me Singing” is a charming brass-infused tune that may remind listeners of Destroyer.

Melancolony’s Soundcloud profile page is modest as it is concise: “We're grown-up children, and our songs are mostly about trying to be adults in our strange world of jobs, kids, and mortgages. Our first album should be complete in April 2016.” Such a profile may not turn heads of indie tastemakers (in the unlikely event they somehow land on Melancolony’s page). Yet, there’s plenty of depth and hooks to reward patient inde fans, particularly fans of dream pop and shoegaze.

Self-produced and self-released, Tunnel Visions was recorded at the Loudermilk’s home studio in Atlanta.
